Recently Corinne and Natascha of VM Travel discovered the many delights of Turkey. The ancient city of Istanbul (formerly Constantinople) was easy to visit from our hotel location in Sultanahmet. The Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, the Basilica Cisterns and even the Grand Bazaar were within walking distance. We enjoyed a traditional Turkish Bath at Çemberlitas dating back to 1584! There were more delights across the Bosphorus on the Asian side including the Galata Tower and the Sultan’s Palace of Dolmabaçe. We took a short flight to the middle of Turkey to Cappadocia which is famed for the hoodoo formations called fairy chimneys. The region has been carved out over centuries by the Myceneans, Turks, and Ottomans into dwellings, churches and banks. A highlight was the Hot Air Balloon ride at 5am when 150 colourful balloons filled up and floated over Göreme, weaving between the cut-banks and skimming just above the hoodoos! We left this magical place on another flight to Izmir to experience a guided tour through the Greek and Roman ruins of Ephesus, some pilgrimage sites and beautiful beaches. Our biggest delight was the friendly Turk- warm, cheeky and full of fun!
